Bottomless brunch meets Sunday roast: we tried free-flowing Sundays at Brigadiers

Resplendent interiors provide the backdrop at Brigadiers.

Forget everything you know about Sunday roasts and bottomless brunch because Brigadiers have just launched Free-Flowing Sundays with a three course BBQ roast menu and this one’s a game changer. The latest venture comes from the Sethi siblings of JKS Restaurants, aka the titans behind the likes of Sri Lankan Hoppers, the Michelin-starred Gymkhana, the queue-inducing Bao and a tonne of other fabulous dining destinations. Located in the Bloomberg Arcade, this opulent Indian barbecue restaurant is in prime position for City workers, meaning that you won’t catch me anywhere near during the week. But, cocktails and BBQ at the weekend? Yes please.

The premise is simple: choose free flowing prosecco, palomas or beer (£15 per person) while you tuck into a feast of starters, a main and a side (£30). Prosecco was actually a quaffable French sparkling wine and the palomas were perfectly punchy and refilled constantly. An assortment of pappadums and chutneys bursting with flavour arrived to our table swiftly, and only minutes after we inhaled the last tangy tomato bite, the main courses were on the way.

It's all about free-flowing drinks and bold flavours at this splendid modern Indian restaurant.

I opted for the dry tandoori masala ribeye, topped with sappers egg and served with succulent sides like bonemarrow dopiaza. Perfectly cooked meaty morsels were absolutely mouthwatering. Since sharing is caring, I also tucked into the other half’s butter masala baby chicken… yes a whole chicken. Fired up rotisserie style, this dreamy dish is served on a bed of pinenut and onion pilau and accompanied with hen’s egg makhani and kachumber raita. Prepare to loosen your belt, because each mighty spread comes with a side of tadka greens and corn, fennel paos bread and chaat masala aloos.

By this point, the thought of dessert was enough to bring on meat sweats, so we took a break and whet our appetite with some more drinks. Seated in The Dining Room, we had great views of the entire venue; from The Tap Room, to the grand Pot Luck Room and the Pool Room which was filled with tipsy diners playing snooker and sipping vintage scotch whisky on tap... all while a brass band marched through each room, providing a lively soundtrack to the Indian barbecue.

There are two desserts on the menu, and our attentive waiter brought one of each, without us having to ask. The chocolate and coconut soft serve kulfi is right up my street; topped with lashings of wood-roasted coconut and candied ginger. The banana and yoghurt kulfi is a different kind of delicious; with fennel butterscotch and pickled bananas in a butter waffle. This pudding is the epitome of Brigadiers: incredible flavours and unconventional pairings that make you wonder why you’ve never tried it before. I’ve never loved a Sunday roast but I’m a brunch fiend and Free-Flowing Sundays bridge the gap perfectly. If you’re looking for an impressive way to spice up your Sunday, this is it.

Free-Flowing Sundays have now launched at Brigadiers. Head to 1-5 Bloomberg Arcade, London, EC4N 8AR for a taste.
