Vespbar - Glasgow Bar Review

Vespbar is something of a hidden gem in Glasgow, everyone who knows it, adores it, though for many it's just another bar, down just another lane, near the station. To show the world what they're missing, we wander down said lane, into said bar, and found a cracking little spot for dinner, drinks and parties.

Vespbar

The bar is decked out with retro furniture taken from a 1950s ice-cream parlour.

The Venue

Vespbar is modeled on a retro Italian cafe bar, the ground floor and upstairs are kitted out in fifties diner style, with red and green splashes, go faster stripes, black and white checkered tiles and a well-stocked bar just opposite the door. The layout of the bar, with its central area with plenty of standing room, and then gallery-style mezzanine upstairs, all lends itself to a bustling and versatile space, whether you're a in group or a couple, whether you want privacy or people watching. Downstairs' Tutti Bar makes a nifty private space for parties as well as home to Vespbar's resident comedy club, The O'Clock Show, decorated like an old school bistro, with gingham table clothes. And if you ask nicely, they'll let you pick up a paddle and challenge your pals in a spot of ping pong.

The Atmosphere & Clientele

Vespbar has a rather dedicated fanbase, from those you file in at weekends for comedy shows, people in for pre-commute bevvies after work, and anyone looking to work out their ping pong elbow. A mixed, young professional-heavy crowd, they, like the Vespbar staff, are a friendly bunch. Buzzing most evenings, the bar fills up at weekends with DJ parties churning out some retro swing and Northern Soul. A chilled out and casual venue in the City Centre, Vespbar makes a laid back spot for a fun night out.

The Food & Drink

Vespbar is famous for two things, pizza (by the metre!) and Prosecco (on tap!). But it's more than just a two trick pony. We enjoyed some plates from the sharing boards and slider collection, a handy spread if you're dining a group - a half metre of mini chicken and beef burgers, nom. The veggie, cheese and bread antipasti is equally delicious. The bar also offer hearty pasta plates, risottos, and dreamy Italian desserts and ice-creams. Hello pannacotta! At the bar of course, there's the bubbly and beers, but Vespbar is equally passionate about its cocktail offering, with the vinyl shaped menu listing a plethora of Prosecco cocktails, (try the Martini Rosito with mint, raspberries, Prosecco and Martini Rosso) as well as a few well-executed classics and shooters.

Summary

Vespbar is a nifty cafe bar, with cracking tunes, a cool crowd and stylish surroundings. Whether you're looking for a casual party night, a laid back date night, or just somewhere fun to gather with your friends, this one may be tucked down a lane, but that doesn't mean it should be overlooked.
