Yes, it’s hot, yes, it’s busy and no, you can’t walk down the Royal Mile without getting poked in the eye with a laminated flyer. But let’s level for a moment because you can’t deny the excitement of the Fringe. Bringing together some of the world’s greatest comedy, cabaret and theatre, it’s one of the only places in the world where you can catch a stunning rendition of Shakespeare, and then cross Bristo Square for a shaving-foam filled hour of frankly very stupid games with childhood favourites and da bungalow residents, Dick and Dom. With so much to see and do, we’ve sifted through the programme and unearthed our top picks for Edinburgh Fringe shows to go and see this year.
Cabaret: Late Night Lip Service
Fancy yourself some late night lip-sync battles hosted by a seven-foot, flame-bearded drag queen? Then this monster of a midnight show will already be tickling that fancy. This interactive showcase of the festival’s wildest acts, and louchest troupers will have you dancing in the aisles and flouncing down catwalks as it gets down and dirty at the Gilded Balloon every weekend in August.
Various dates from 3rd - 25th of August at the Gilded Balloon
Back with a new mystery and some more mischief, The Misfits of London are storming the Big Apple and you can bet they’ll be getting up to some higinks. Back for their fourth year at Fringe, this hilarious radio drama parody will have you equal parts on the edge of your seat, and snorting a complimentary gin and tonic out of your nostrils.
Various Dates from 8th - 26th of August at Artspace at St Marks
Theatre: Talking to the Dead – A Séance
Having sold out the Brighton Fringe and Brighton HorrorFest for the last two years, 2018 looks set to be another clean sweep for magician duo, and self-professed ‘pioneers of slapdash magic’, Griffin and Jones. Back with their immersive theatre piece that uses Victorian séance techniques to take you on a journey into the ether, by the end of the show even the sceptics amongst you might find yourselves on a path to believing.
3rd - 4th and 24th - 26th of August at Sweet Novotel
Circus: Attrape Moi! (Catch Me)
Everyone likes catching up with old friends. You chill out, chat and show off your sweet trampo-wall skills and stuff, right? Okay, so maybe not everyone catches up like Quebec’s Flip FabriQue. Bringing daring stunts and an irrepressible energy, Attrape-Moi! is back for yet another season of cutting-edge circus in this show about friendship and being really, really good at diablo.
Various dates from 2nd - 27th August at Assembly Hall
Something A Little Different: Margaret Thatcher Queen Of Club Nights
Bringing the party, in no uncertain terms, this disco extravaganza sees former Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, switching between sweet eighties tunes quicker than you can say: "In retrospect the Housing Act may not have worked out in our favour." If you’ve ever caught one of Maggie’s shows before, you’ll be used to the niche political satire she brings in abundance. From pulling a U-turn on Section 28 in Queen Of Soho, to making hapless contestants battle it out for Job Seekers’ Allowance in Queen Of Gameshows, you can expect an acerbic wit dressed up in a big, sparkly, power-dressed wrapper.
Various dates from 4th - 25th of August at the Gilded Balloon Teviot
The Edinburgh Fringe takes place from the 3rd - 27th of August across the city.
