52 Canoes is an easy-going tiki den for people who don’t take themselves too seriously. Step off Melville Street and into this subterranean cavern of cool, where breakky is served all day and a constant stream of rum punches inevitably flow straight to the dance floor.

Variety is what makes 52 Canoes tick, especially when it comes to their headline cocktail list. Each creation is an original and comes bursting with exotic flavours; your best bet is the rum-based mixes but there’s plenty of room for manoeuvre.

The food is pretty special too. Menus are frequently chopped and changed to keep things fresh but you’ll more than likely encounter a banquet of burgers, nachos and satisfying breakfast plates. Don’t dare leave without sampling their famed southern fried chicken and cheese chilli waffles either.

There’s frequent drink deals, staff are a good laugh and DJs drop a foot-stomping blend of funk, electro, swing and motown tunes to get the weekends started right.
