New York, 1922 - The restlessness approached hysteria. The parties were bigger. The pace was faster, the shows were broader, the buildings were higher, the morals were looser, and the liquor was cheaper.
--F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

--Nick Carraway, The Great Gatsby

The Era
The 1920s have long been remembered as the "Roaring Twenties," an era of unprecedented affluence. A Ford Model T in every driveway, "Amos n' Andy" on the radio and the first "talking" motion pictures at the cinema. Baseball hero Babe Ruth was in the ballpark and celebrity pilot Charles Lindbergh on the front page of every newspaper. As a soaring stock market minted millionaires by the thousands, young Americans in the nation's cities rejected traditional social values by embracing a modern urban culture of freedom—drinking illegally in speakeasies, dancing provocatively to the Charleston and listening to the sexy rhythms of jazz music.
